If you are paying out of your own pocket for your education, make sure you commit yourself to investing your time and energy into getting a return on your investment.
As a former college adjunct professor, I had experiences with different students who were under the impression the money they paid the university entitled them to a degree of deferential treatment. In other words, they treated the university like it was a ‘pay to play’. They were paying for their education so they were entitled to a particular grade.
Now, I am the son of School Teacher and grandson of TWO school teachers so I take education VERY seriously. I try my best to do everything possible to accommodate and work with every student I can to ensure their success. I know I can’t help every student but I truly believe in the power of being a resource to those who are truly committed to learn.
The danger of thinking that ‘paying for your education’ is the same as ‘paying for a grade’ is that you are doing yourself a disservice. By having that attitude, you are effectively saying you have no desire to learn. Your only interest is in paying for the grade.
Everyone has their own goals and objectives when they decide to finance their education. However, you truly hurt yourself in the long run if you focus on ‘paying for a good grade’ as part of ‘paying for a degree’.
Education is one of many tools for yourself. But if you never take the time to learn how to use those tools.
