Advice for New Graduates: Words of Wisdom for the Next Chapter

Image
June often marks a celebratory time in many young people's lives, as it is typically the period when graduations occur. Across the country and around the world, students graduate from various educational levels, from high school to doctorates. This time offers a wonderful opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments and milestones as they prepare to transition into the next phase of their lives. This spring was particularly special for me, as my granddaughter graduated from high school and is about to embark on the next chapter of her life as a freshman at Northwestern University. We had the chance to travel and watch her graduate, and while I was there, I shared a few words with her. In light of our discussion, I wanted to share those words with anyone who might benefit from them. **1. Embrace Diversity:** Be prepared to meet people from different walks of life and cultures. Moving in with a new roommate may be your first encounter with conflict management. Be open to everyone’s...

Two Transformative Moments: A Journey of Scholarship and Graduation

Image
In the afternoon of May 3, 1991, my journey as an Army ROTC Scholar culminated in my commissioning as a 2nd Lieutenant. This journey held significant meaning for me, as I initially arrived at the University without a scholarship. Joining Army ROTC as a freshman, I hadn't entertained the possibility of receiving one. Funding for my first year and a half of college came from student loans, Pell grants, college work-study, and a job as a Resident Assistant. However, in the spring of my sophomore year, I learned that I had been awarded a 2 ½ Army ROTC scholarship, ensuring my college education would be fully covered. The following afternoon, on May 4, 1991, I crossed the veranda of my alma mater, the University of Tampa, to receive my Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. My time at the University of Tampa was truly a labor of love. Initially feeling like a 'fish out of water,' Tampa was the farthest I had ever traveled, and I had never attended a private school before. I face...

From Their World to Success: Connecting with Youth Through Shared Experiences

Image
A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of speaking to middle school students, and one key message I wanted to convey was that I once walked in their shoes. It's crucial to recognize the profound impact it has on young minds when they not only have access to successful individuals but also see reflections of themselves in those figures. While it's easy to list accomplishments, connecting with young people necessitates them understanding your shared background. By "coming from their world," I don't simply mean being young once; it's about conveying that I emerged from circumstances similar to theirs, whether growing up in a single-parent household, residing in an apartment, or living in a rural area. For some youths, envisioning a path to success requires seeing individuals who resemble them and have faced comparable challenges achieving success.

Navigating the Process of Quitting a Job

Image
Title: Navigating the Process of Quitting a Job Nobody explicitly teaches you how to quit a job; while numerous resources focus on job hunting, interviews, and workplace etiquette, guidance on quitting is scarce. Many of us linger in roles longer than necessary, often due to financial or personal obligations, or simply the absence of immediate alternatives. A key piece of advice is recognizing when it's time to leave. Signs often emerge gradually or suddenly. Acute situations, like changes in management or job dynamics, provide clear signals, whereas chronic dissatisfaction can slowly erode motivation and interest. In acute cases, each day delayed reinforces the decision to leave, amplifying emotional and physical strain. Chronic dissatisfaction is subtler, creeping in over time, making it challenging to pinpoint when discontent began. It's crucial to heed these signs promptly. Delaying action can prolong unhappiness and hinder personal growth. While external factors like fami...

Crafting my leadership Journey: A Testament to purposeful paths

Image
Sometimes, we need a reminder that our pathway is not accidental. In my high school days, embarking on the journey through ROTC, I aspired to become an officer. Inspired by the legacy of my uncles, both officers in the Air Force and the Army, serving as an officer became a dream rooted in a strong family tradition of military service. As I pursued my goal, I initially looked to others as models of leadership, not realizing that the path I was forging for myself outside the conventional norms was also shaping the leader within me. When I earned my commission as an Army Reserve officer, it initially felt disheartening not to be on active duty. However, in retrospect, the designation mattered less than my commitment to learning and seizing training opportunities, crucial for the leader I aimed to be. Surprisingly, a few years into my Army Reserve commission, I was offered the chance to become a naval officer, stepping in with a slightly higher rank as a Lieutenant Junior Grade. The surpri...

Navigating the Maze of College Degrees: Beyond the Parchment

Image
In a recent video, I explored the intricacies of college degrees, focusing on both the rewarding and challenging aspects of pursuing higher education. The prevailing notion that a degree automatically unlocks doors is often tied to the university's reputation. While this may hold true in certain career fields and for specific degrees, it's essential to scrutinize the practicality of obtaining a degree without a strategic plan. The common pitfall lies in acquiring a degree without a clear plan for its utilization. Degrees undoubtedly carry weight in opening doors, as witnessed by the lengths individuals go to secure opportunities for their children. However, the critical question often overlooked is, "What job do you want immediately after graduation?" This inquiry forces individuals to consider the tangible outcomes of their degree, prompting a closer look at whether the desired job necessitates a degree or values expertise over formal education.   An even more signif...

Navigating College Scholarships: A Lesson in Opportunity

Looking back, I often wish someone had taken the time to sit me down and explain how I could have pursued a debt-free college education. My hindsight reveals that I could have handled my opportunity with the Army ROTC scholarship very differently. During my senior year, I had the chance to participate in the scholarship application process for the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC). At the time, my weighted GPA was around 3.4-3.5, and I was deeply involved in various activities, both within my church, school, and the community. I was also active in martial arts. Despite my involvement, I had a tendency to underestimate my own capabilities, often believing that my peers were more deserving than I was. To apply for the Army ROTC scholarship, I had to complete a three-part process. The first part was straightforward: filling out the application. The second step involved an interview with an Army ROTC officer, and the final step was a physical fitness test. Filling out the applicat...
