Look at where you are in your life and ask yourself this question:
“Did you get to there in the way you thought you would get there?”
Ask yourself another question:
“Did you expect to be where you are in the first place?”
We are meant for great things and we are constantly striving to try and get to the next level of our lives. However, we often have, in our minds, this imaginary path we believe we have to travel in order to get there. What’s even worse is we will either 1) beat ourselves up or 2) feel sad if we think we didn’t get to where we are meant to be in the path we THINK we should take.
I am often asked, ‘when you used to work for the State of Florida as a State Employee, did you ever think, in the future, you would be a Naval Officer, an attorney, business owner, college professor, or a judge’ and I say ‘No’. People are often surprised when I tell them that I never thought I would be in any of these positions.
It’s not because I didn’t think I was capable of these positions. It’s because I didn’t envision being in these positions. As such, at each point of my life, when I was in the position to do these things, I often look back and ask myself “How in the hell did I get here?”.
What I came to realize was that each evolution of my life was a ‘life detour’, a point where I take a different path which allows me to evolve to a greater version of myself.
Just don’t treat your ‘life detours’ as ‘life destinations’. Often times, when we go through ‘life detours’ where we are shocked to be in a much better position than before. So, we end up convincing ourselves that this MUST be our final destination or our ‘life destination’. Just remember we are a work in progress so every step you take is an opportunity to evolve yourself and move yourself towards your true life destination.
So remember, when you are making moves in your life to do certain things and find yourself taking ‘life detours’, don’t stress if you think these detours take you along a longer route to your destination. Just keep moving forward and trust your path is taking you to your true ‘life destination’.
