All Attorneys are NOT created equal

 I hate family law.

There, I said it.

Oh, and I hate Criminal, Immigration, Probate law, and ohh, why go on any further!

It’s not that it’s hard.  It’s just that it’s……..Oh, who am I kidding.  It’s ALL HARD!  LOL!

But that’s not the reason why I hate it.

When attorneys go to law school, we are trained how to think.   We all have foundational courses we take (i.e. legal writing, contracts law, property law, torts, civil procedure, constitutional law, and criminal law).  However, these foundational courses serve as a tool to help us readjust our mindsets.  We aren’t being taught THE LAW.  We are being taught how to ENGAGE the law.   We are learning the Rules of Engagement.  We are learning how to view things through a very different set of glasses than the average public.  In other words, as I said before, we are trained to think.

Once we get admitted to practice law, we learn something fairly quickly.  In any area of law, there is a LOT OF LAW!!  You can find a lawyer who has practiced a specific area of law for over 20 years and will tell you they STILL don’t know everything.

Why is this important?

Because ALL attorneys are not created equal!

I’m not saying this in terms of intelligence.  I’m saying this in terms of proficiency and competency.

Still confused??  Ok, think of it like this.   Think about a handy person.  A handy person is someone who can fix anything in your house.  A clogged sink.  A hole in the wall.  Loose wiring in the bathroom.  They can do a lot.  However, would you call a hand person to replace your A/C unit?  How about fumigating your home?  How about getting the mold out of your home?   In those situations, you want a specialist.  You want someone who ONLY focuses on A/C replacement, insect fumigation, or removing mold.

As such, don’t look at attorneys as a handy person.  A jack of all trades of law who can answer any legal question.    Look at attorneys as highly trained specialists.

And, here’s a little secret, ATTORNEYS DON’T TREAT ALL ATTORNEYS as equal.

When people call me asking questions about Family law, I go to my good friend, Ingrid, who’s been doing family law for almost 20 years.

When people call me about Immigration, my go to person is Stef (who is bilingual, by the way).   Can I research the answer??

Sure I can but why do that when I have Attorneys who are experts at my fingertips.

I know it’s frustrating sometimes to ask questions about things and it’s easy to think that any attorney can answer a legal question.

Just know this.  Most attorneys are smart enough and legally trained enough to give you a rough answer to your legal question.  However, the vast majority of attorneys know that it’s best to send you to someone who does the area of law all of the time because, as I said, “All attorneys are not created equal”.
